Taking time out of her busy schedule, Fern Britton dropped in on a number of classes at the School including a unique music lesson with students playing keyboards and drums. Fern then moved to the College for a sumptuous three-course lunch, prepared by College students and served in the Domestic Independence flat.
Fern really enjoyed her visit and said: “it was fantastic to see the wonderful work Treloar’s does and to meet so many of the staff and students.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10753983122437401073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829676353272547437.post-56616427849496330492010-05-28T13:51:00.009+01:002010-06-15T10:00:46.163+01:00Treloar’s Direct meets the Rugby Football Union

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) Injured Players Foundation recently benefited from Treloar’s Direct, the UK's first mobile assessment and therapy service for disabled people when it was based at Salisbury Rugby Club.

Treloar's Direct is the culmination of over 100 years of expertise and experience of assistive technology and therapy skills for which Treloar School and College in Hampshire are widely renowned. This innovative service visits communities throughout the South with a state-of-the-art vehicle (the Trailblazer) enabling multi-disciplinary assessments and resulting in cost effective assistive technology and therapy recommendations. It is answering the increasing call from people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties to enjoy their lives independently.

Bob Bayley, Business Development Director said: "Treloar's Direct has been established to take our expertise beyond our School and College and into the wider community. After meeting with Dr Mike England (Medical Director) and Dave Phillips (Injured Player Welfare Officer) at the RFU, we were able to determine the best way to facilitate Treloar's Direct unique service for the benefit of members of the RFU Inured Players Association. We identified a number of injured rugby players who would benefit most from our multi-disciplinary assessments and recommendations on board the Trailblazer. With diverse needs, these clients required a bespoke service that for some would enable them to return to their own home from residential care and for others would allow them to test drive the latest technology.

Our first programme with four injured players has proven to us all that we can make a valuable contribution to the Foundation providing help and support to players and their families. We are looking forward to helping more players in the future."

Players who as a result of a Rugby accident have suffered different injures, some resulting in tetraplegia or a brain injury had the opportunity to work over two intensive days with experienced engineers and therapists. Clients also looked at the latest assistive technology equipment and discussed with Treloar’s Direct staff how their needs can be met.

Dave Phillips, Injured Player Welfare Officer said:” It is always our aim to provide the best support and help to our injured players. Their needs are continually changing from the time of their original injury through their life stages. The help and assistance from family and friends varies as they get older. Increasingly technology can provide the answers to enable them to gain the most independence and in many instances be in a position to achieve employment.

Treloar's Direct assessments are the ideal arrangement to enable us to fully understand each players individual needs and focus on bespoke recommendations. Our first four pilot assessments proved to us the value of this service and we are considering more in the future.”

Yvonne, whose son took part in an assessment said: “ The day went very well and I was particularly impressed by the professional staff. It was useful to be able to narrow down the exact details of my son’s disability enabling us all to focus on priorities.”

Travelling from John O’Groats to Lands End in a Piaggio APE 50cc three wheeler, James will cover a daunting 874 miles in under a week. He hopes to raise an impressive £50,000 for Treloar’s and the charities WaterAid and Sense.

Starting on 17 May, James will make his way slowly through the country, stopping at Glasgow, Manchester and Bristol. James will be accompanied by Treloar’s patron and celebrated yachtsman Stuart Boreham who completed a similar trip on a lawnmower in 1996.

Vanessa Casey, Director of External Affairs, Treloar Trust said: “We’re delighted that James is raising money on our behalf. It’s an extremely generous gesture and one that will benefit Treloar’s and its students immeasurably.

“Money raised will go towards our ‘Vision Treloar’s’ campaign. Vision Treloar’s is a £20 million programme that will transform our current facilities so that we can meet the increasingly complex demands of students with severe physical disabilities.”

James Booth added: “I’ve seen at first hand the fantastic support that Treloar’s provides to students. Treloar’s has been a pioneer in the care, education and support of students with complex disabilities for more than a century. I’m delighted I can contribute towards an exciting new chapter in Treloar’s history.”

Amanda succeeds Pat Teague who is retiring as Principal after four years. Amanda joins Treloar’s from the National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE) where she was Executive Director and Further Education College Principal.

Tony Reid, Chief Executive, Treloar Trust said:
“Amanda has a fantastic track record with extensive experience in both mainstream and specialist colleges. Combined with her background in strategic planning, she was the outstanding candidate for this role.

“Amanda joins at an exciting time. Treloar’s is currently undergoing a £20 million transformation as part of a wide ranging project called Vision Treloar’s. The most ambitious project in the organisation’s history will unite Treloar School and College, creating a single world leading centre of expertise for young people with disabilities.

We foresee Amanda playing a vital role in the implementation of Vision Treloar’s as Principal of both Treloar School and College.

“As an experienced special education leader, Amanda will also help further the development of Treloar’s outreach services over the coming years. Amanda has a clear commitment to multidisciplinary working and a proven ability to improve service delivery and enhance external relationships.”

Amanda Quincey, Principal at Treloar School and College, said:

“Treloar’s is highly regarded as a progressive and forward thinking organisation. The facilities are superb, but it is the staff and students who have made it such a compelling success story. Students thrive in an environment that challenges them to set ambitious goals while also providing them with the care and support they need.

“It’s for this reason that so many Treloar’s students have achieved success, including becoming successful sportsmen, actors, entrepreneurs and advocates for disability policy. I’m looking forward to becoming part of the Treloar’s team and helping it maintain its position as a market leading provider of services for students with learning disabilities and difficulties.”

Treloar’s recently launched a collection of services called FlexiOptions to help local authorities meet new requirements to commission education and training services for young people with disabilities and learning difficulties. Treloar's, the groundbreaking School and College for students with disabilities, has called for earlier intervention and improved ongoing assessment processes to meet the complex needs of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN).

In a new white paper, Treloar’s outlines the main issues facing local authorities (LAs), including new responsibilities to commission education and training services for young people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties aged 0-25, and provision of short breaks for parents and students.

The white paper is released at the same time as the launch of Treloar’s FlexiOptions, an innovative portfolio of services, giving funding authorities flexible and cost-effective ways of providing personalised support, including short term placements and mobile multi-disciplinary assessments. The white paper is available at http://www.treloar.org.uk/FlexiOptions/.

Tony Reid, Chief Executive, Treloar Trust said:
“The changing nature of young people’s disabilities is creating major challenges for local authorities and other commissioning agencies such as Primary Care Trusts. We have seen a marked increase in the numbers of learners with very complex physical disabilities and learning, health and care needs. Some of these young people have been described as ‘technologically-dependent’ or have Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) With almost 10,000 pupils defined as having PMLD in 2009, some mainstream schools and colleges find it difficult to integrate these learners into the curriculum in a meaningful way.

“The response of LAs to such pressures is very patchy indeed, and the combination of families’ rights and expectations and the severe financial constraints which will undoubtedly follow the General Election will greatly exacerbate the situation. Some LAs struggled to meet demand even before the introduction of new responsibilities, with DCSF estimating in 2009 that there were nearly 1.5 million pupils with SEN without statements.

“Over the last decade the proliferation of Government legislation and initiatives for children with special needs and their families has further complicated the picture. The Children, Schools and Families Bill passing through Parliament will provide parents with greater powers of appeal while the Government has recently announced plans to compel local authorities to provide short breaks for parents of disabled children. It estimated that local authority costs nationally would range between £235,000 and £475,000 per annum though the total cost could be significantly more and difficult to justify in a period of recession. “

DCSF is supporting the launch of Treloar’s FlexiOptions:

“The DCSF welcomes Treloar’s FlexiOptions, the groundbreaking initiative that is a blueprint for how independent service providers can work with and support local authorities in a cost-effective partnership during the learner journey of their students with physical disabilities.”

Treloar’s FlexiOptions includes:

- Treloar’s Direct, a mobile unit with state-of-the-art speech, language and mobility technologies to accurately assess the educational needs of students.
- The Flexibility Project which involves disabled SEN students from mainstream colleges staying at Treloar’s for a number of weeks to learn key day-to-day skills they will need on leaving education, including cooking, cleaning and shopping.
- Care for Everyone, a programme planned to provide much needed time-off for carers and parents with support from experienced professionals.
- Employment programmes and a range of residential multidisciplinary assessments, including overnight stays or short stays of up to four weeks.

Graham Jowett, Education Project Director at Treloar’s, added:

“Providing young people with special educational needs with earlier intervention is critical both to deliver truly personalised learning and to ensure services are cost-effective. Local authorities must support the ‘Learner Journey’ of students with disabilities, a process which requires an investment in their developmental needs as well as a focus on outcomes such as transition to adulthood, employability and independent living.

“With greater emphasis on parents’ rights and participation , LAs will be under pressure to ensure the right support is given to young people and their families to enable them to reach their potential. At Treloar’s we have over 100 years experience of providing education, therapy, care, independence skills and support to young people with severe and complex disabilities. With the launch of FlexiOptions, we can share our experience and expertise in a more flexible and cost-effective way, helping LAs meet the needs of individual students.”

FlexiOptions is being underpinned by Vision Treloar’s, a major investment programme occurring at Treloar’s. Vision Treloar’s will transform facilities to meet the increasing needs of local authorities.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10753983122437401073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829676353272547437.post-85175895261875793912009-08-11T17:47:00.002+01:002009-08-11T17:49:13.916+01:00Treloar's Now Featured on DisabledGear.com
Treloar's school and college is now featured on and is supporting a new website called http://www.disabledgear.com, which is a free ads site for buying and selling second hand disability equipment.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10753983122437401073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829676353272547437.post-55167558036159025402009-07-24T17:41:00.001+01:002010-06-15T10:06:32.157+01:00Roger Black Joins Team Treloar’s School and College

Olympic medal winner and TV presenter Roger Black has become a Patron of Treloar’s, the School and College for students with severe and complex disabilities based in Hampshire.
Roger will work closely with Treloar’s aspiring Paralympians providing a unique blend of athletics expertise, motivation and moral support in the run up to London 2012 and beyond. Roger joins Jeff Stelling, Michael Aspel and Alan Titchmarsh on Treloar’s Board of Patrons.

Tony Reid, Chief Executive, Treloar Trust, said: “Treloar’s provides great support to its 300 plus students. But it also challenges students to question stereotypes and aspire to greater things, often through sporting activity.

“We’re delighted that Roger has become a patron. From his success on the athletics track in the 1990s through to his burgeoning TV career, Roger has shown what can be achieved through a combination of talent and hard work. We believe he can be an inspiration to our students, many of whom face tough challenges on a day-to-day basis.”

Roger Black said: “I really look forward to working with the students and staff at Treloar’s. Physical activity clearly plays a huge role in School and College education. Be it Boccia, athletics or swimming, sport helps improve student self esteem and motivates them to achieve greater ambitions.”

Roger’s greatest individual achievement in track and field was in the1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, when he won the silver medal for the 400m. In recognition of his achievements he was awarded the MBE in 1992. Since retiring from athletics Roger has worked as a television presenter and motivational speaker. He has regularly worked for the BBC on Grandstand and was team captain on classic television show 'Superstars'. He has also taken part in the successful reality shows Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Masterchef.

Treloar’s has an impressive pedigree of training potential Paralympic athletes. For example, students Craig Dewart and Ben McGifford have both competed at regional and national athletics events in the last year. In recognition of Treloar’s success in this area, Treloar’s won the coveted Daily Telegraph Sports Matters award for Excellence in Disabled Sport in 2008.

Treloar’s also had a number of athletes at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics. Former students David Smith, Dan Bentley and Ben Rushgrove all won medals at the 2008 Paralympics. Ben Rushgrove won a silver medal in the T36 100m race despite breaking his foot. David Smith and Dan Bentley both won gold in Boccia. Treloar’s hopes to repeat this success at the London 2012 Paralympics.
Eight musicians from the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) of Great Britain, including three ‘Young Musician of the Year’ finalists, visited Treloar’s, along with Brian Irvine, composer in residence to the Ulster Orchestra, Belfast and Welsh National Operas

The students took part in a number of innovative projects, including an initiative which involved students turning a painting into a musical composition. Treloar’s students were invited to paint a picture of a journey. After discussing with NYO musicians, this was then turned into a musical piece, with students conducting and musicians from the NYO improvising.

Lucy, a student at Treloar’s, said. “I was really amazed by the NYO’s performance of my song ‘Fanfare for a Battle’. It was incredible to hear it on real instruments and played so beautifully. All the members of the orchestra were very friendly and encouraging.”
