Treloar’s welcomes National Youth Orchestra for innovative music programme

Treloar School’s students this week took part in a five day workshop with some of the UK’s best young musicians, designed to help students learn about musical composition, performance and directing. Eight musicians from the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) of Great Britain, including three ‘Young Musician of the Year’ finalists, visited Treloar’s, along with Brian Irvine, composer in residence to the Ulster Orchestra, Belfast and Welsh National Operas

The students took part in a number of innovative projects, including an initiative which involved students turning a painting into a musical composition. Treloar’s students were invited to paint a picture of a journey. After discussing with NYO musicians, this was then turned into a musical piece, with students conducting and musicians from the NYO improvising.

Lucy, a student at Treloar’s, said. “I was really amazed by the NYO’s performance of my song ‘Fanfare for a Battle’. It was incredible to hear it on real instruments and played so beautifully. All the members of the orchestra were very friendly and encouraging.”

Brian Irvine joined the workshop to help students compose and conduct their songs. He also created a unique mixture of students’ original compositions, performed by the NYO and conducted by the Treloar’s students.
